Amiri Baraka

Amiri Baraka (1934–2014). Accomplished, lauded, and often controversial, the poet and playwright Amiri Baraka helped found the Black Arts Movement. Born Everett LeRoi Jones, in Newark, New Jersey, he converted to Islam in 1968 and changed his name. Baraka’s poems draw on African-American traditions, including jazz and the blues.
