The Iraqi poet Badr Shakir al-Sayyab (1926–1964), along with the poet Nazik al-Mala’ika, launched the free verse movement in Arabic during the late 1940s, revolutionizing both the form and the content of the poem. His famous “Rain Song” uses natural rhythms in the traditional qasida form.
