Dress rehearsal for the Arena Stage production of The Arabian Nights, Washington DC, 2011

Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor, and Queen Scheherazade. Readers recognize these names from the 1001 Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights. These fantastical stories were introduced to Europe in 1704 by French antiquarian Antoine Galland. Since then translations have spawned countless Western artworks and shaped popular culture, from Diaghilev’s ballet Scheherazade (1910) to Disney’s Aladdin (1992).
