The Poet, trade unionist, and journalist Faiz Ahmad Faiz (1911–1984, Pakistan) was celebrated for poems in traditional forms expanded to address political and social issues. In 1951 he was jailed, accused of participating in an attempted Soviet-backed coup d’état against the first government of Pakistan.
